Lagos @ 50: Ambode grace Community Day, Carnival Celebrations

Lagos @ 50: Ambode grace Community Day, Carnival Celebrations

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Saturday graced the Lagos @ 50 Community Day and Carnival Celebrations, assuring that his administration will continue to run an all inclusive government where all Lagosians can have and feel a sense of belonging regardless of party affiliation, creed or colour.

The Community Day and Carnival Celebrations was held simultaneously in 20 venues spread across the local governments in the State and featured series of fanfare activities including parade of various street carnival group parade, traditional dancers, children calisthenics display, dance competitions, among others.
Governor Ambode, who spoke at the Ago Hausa, Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area venue, said that through the various infrastructural upgrade in areas that were hitherto neglected, Government was demonstrating that Lagos is a State of inclusion in which all law-abiding, hardworking and honest persons will earn their fair rewards.
He said: “Almost two years after you gave our party, the All Progressives Congress your vote, the majority who had their way and the minority who had their say can attest to the fact that our government has operated like the sun that shines brightly on everybody.”

While pledging his administration’s commitment to continue to deliver the dividends of democracy, the Governor attributed the successes the State has recorded in the last 50 years to the good citizens who see Lagos as “a collective responsibility, an unfinished business that is always developing capacity to serve the citizens by making them safer, happier and wealthier”

Governor Ambode also said that the efforts of law abiding citizens have given his administration the confidence and courage to boldly combat the problems confronting the State.

“Whether it is crime, filth or social nuisance, we have left no stone unturned because you have entrusted to us your lives, day and night. I pledge, here and again, that we shall never betray that trust.
“So let us be merry even as we re-dedicate ourselves to the journey towards greater prosperity that lies ahead of us. Let our communities help our Local Council Development Areas and our Local Government Areas to rise to the challenge of a greater Lagos of our dreams”.

He said the Community Day Celebration was devoted to acknowledging the millions of families who live together and work together to create communities of peace and bliss and who according to him is the most important asset.

“It is a duty we owe because you are the men and women who hold this State together; you are the workers who keep the industries running; the traders who make our markets boom; the public officials who support us to render services. Among you here today are people of diverse professions, religions and ethnic backgrounds. We are all united by the great citizenship that residing in Lagos State confers.

“I thank you for shouldering the responsibilities of the good citizen of Lagos State. The citizen who is registered as a resident, pays taxes, obeys our laws, supports our policies, protects our projects and comes to the rescue of his neighbour in danger,” Governor Ambode said.

The Governor who also graced the Lagos Island Carnival at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) was treated to colourful display by several local and international communities and ethnic groups as well as acrobatic maneuvering by motorcycle stunt performers.

At least 12 students commit suicide in central India over exam results

At least 12 students commit suicide in central India over exam results

At least 12 students have committed suicide in the central Indian state of Madhya over examination results since Friday, a senior police official said Sunday.

"The suicides were reported from across the state. The victims were all depressed over their poor performances in class X and XII exams conducted by the Madhya Pradesh education board," he said on condition of anonymity.

"While some died by hanging themselves from the ceiling fans in their homes, a few committed suicide by injecting themselves with toxic substance and others by drinking poison. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem," the official said.

It was not the first time that such a number of suicides have taken place in one state over exam results due to high stress that students encounter from their parents who expect their wards to score well to get admission in colleges for future studies.

More than 70 students have taken their lives in Kota, a town in the western state of Rajasthan, over the past five years for failing to pass the extremely competitive admission exams for medical and engineering colleges.

Motivation: The Power of Giving

lawson james blog entertainment news

Many of us have heard the expression  Giving is its own reward. And while this is certainly true, and more than reason enough to give, there is another aspect of giving that many fail to recognize.

Giving is an energy that not only help others but creates even more for the person who is doing the giving. This is a natural law that is true regardless of whether the who is giving wants or even realizes what is occurring.

Money is circulation. It needs to flow. When you are frightened, selfish, or when you hoard everything for yourself, you literally stop the circulation. You create clogged pipes, making it difficult to keep money flowing back to your direction. Any success you have is despite your lack of giving. the way to get the flow going again is to start giving, be generous. Pay others well, tip your waitress that extra money. Support several charities. Watch what happens! Things will start popping up out of nowhere.

The same dynamic is true if you want to fill your life with love or something else worthwhile. Giving and receiving are two sides of the coin. If you want more love, or fun, or respect, or success, or anything else, the way to get it is very simple: Give away. Don't worry about a thing. The universe what it's doing. Everything you give will return with interest.

This is a pleasant 2nd anniversary gift to the people of Nigeria.
I cannot express in a few words how happy I am to welcome our dear girls back to freedom.
On behalf of all Nigerians, I'd like to share my joy with you, your parents, your relatives, friends and Government of Borno State on regaining your freedom.
The Federal Government would like to commend the Security Agencies, the Red Cross, local authorities, local and foreign NGOs and all those who contributed in one way or another to secure the release of our Chibok Girls.
Let me reassure Nigerians, especially relatives and friends of the remaining girls that the Federal Government will spare no effort to see that they and all other Nigerians who have been abducted safely regain their freedom.
Finally, I am very pleased to have personally met you and let me assure you that the Presidency will personally supervise the performance of those entrusted with your welfare and commitments made by the Federal Government on your health, education, security and general well-being.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho does not believe it is a gamble to priorities the Europa League over a top-four finish in the Premier League, saying it is "common sense".
United hold a 1-0 lead over Celta Vigo heading into Today's semi-final second leg at Old Trafford. Mourinho says a busy fixture schedule made it necessary to prioritise."Seventeen matches in seven weeks is impossible. It's not a gamble, just a consequence of our situation," he said.

Chinese architecture fans toast 'beer keg' tower blocks in Suzhou

lawson james blog entertainment news

Five office buildings in the eastern Chinese city of Suzhou have been given the nickname “Pijiutong,” meaning beer kegs. About 80 meters tall, the towers have been built in a cylindrical shape which makes them look very similar to those beer kegs in bars. But according to the official introduction, the design concept originated from “spring bamboo shoots breaking through the ground.”

Ambode tasks academic community on quality research to drive growth

lawson james blog news

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday called on the academic community to come up with quality research work that would create a platform for good governance and set the country on the path of economic growth and development.

Governor Ambode, who spoke at Lagos House in Ikeja when he received management team of University of Lagos (UNILAG) on courtesy visit led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rahmon Bello, said the time had come for practical collaboration between the government and the academic community for the overall benefit of the country.

“The time has actually come for practical collaboration between government and the academia. I think we have missed out all the great opportunities that we have seen in most of the Ivy League schools that we have all gone to, to see the huge advantage that comes in the collaboration between the academic community and government and that is where I want us to actually focus on.

“We need to now see how the academic community can help in our vision for growth and development. There are so many things that should actually come from the academic community that allows government to create a platform for good governance and reduce the cost of governance and this will only come from the research work that comes out from the university,” Governor Ambode said.

The Governor, who is a product of UNILAG, described the visit by the management of the institution as historic, and harped on the need to build on it to ensure purposeful synergy for growth and development.

The Governor, while expressing excitement at a new office created by UNILAG on Innovation and Enterprise, also called for concerted efforts from key players to grow the informal sector, saying that the sector remained critical to the growth of the economy.

“The economy in Nigeria actually needs new entrepreneurs. We need them because they are the bulk of the system itself and then when you count the formal sector, it is just 10 per cent of the economy in Lagos. The bulk of the economy of Lagos is in the informal sector and we need to do a lot of research and collaboration to be able to bring the entrepreneurship in the informal sector into the framework of growing GDP of Lagos.

“We are excited about the fact that we are the fifth largest economy in Africa with $136billion GDP but the truth is our vision is to make Lagos the third largest economy in Africa in the next five years and we believe we can do it and the way to do it is for us to spend our way into that particular bracket,” Governor Ambode said.

Earlier, Professor Bello said the visit was to associate with Governor Ambode who is the first alumnus of UNILAG to govern the State, as well as to scale up partnership with the State Government for development.

He particularly congratulated the Governor for his sterling performance in office in the last two years in all the sectors and sections of the State, saying that the projects had positively impacted the people.

The VC specifically noted the numerous roads and flyover projects, traffic decongestion activities through lay-bys and bus stops, housing development, education and tourism projects, as well as huge investment on security apparatus, saying tax payers’ money spent on security was now making the people to sleep with their two eyes closed.

He, however, called for involvement of UNILAG on the move by the Governor to create technology hub in Yaba, and other parts of the State.

Facebook Inc to add 3,000 people to monitor reports of inappropriate material on the social media network

lawson james blog entertainment news

Facebook Inc will add 3,000 people over the next year to monitor reports of inappropriate material on the social media network and remove videos such as murders and suicides, Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said on Wednesday.

Zuckerberg, the company's co-founder, said in a Facebook post the workers will be in addition to the 4,500 people who already review posts that may violate its terms of service.

The hiring spree represents an acknowledgement by Facebook that, at least for now, it needs more than automated software to improve the monitoring of broadcasts on Facebook Live, a service that has been marred since its launch last year by instances of people streaming violent content.

Last week, a father in Thailand broadcast himself killing his daughter on Facebook Live, police said. After more than a day, and 370,000 views, Facebook removed the video. Other videos have also shocked viewers with their violence.

Zuckerberg said "we're working to make these videos easier to report so we can take the right action sooner – whether that's responding quickly when someone needs help or taking a post down."

Facebook is due to report quarterly revenue and earnings later on Wednesday after markets close in New York.

Britain's Prince Philip to stand down from royal duties

Britain's Prince Philip, the 95-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II, will stand down from his royal duties, according to a statement posted by Buckingham Palace on Thursday.

The Duke of Edinburgh will no longer carry out public engagements from this autumn, but will continue to be associated with over 780 organizations of which he is patron, president or a member, according to the statement.

Philip is the oldest male member of the British royal family in history. He also holds the record as the longest-serving consort to a reigning British monarch.

Besides accompanying the Queen in her official duties and appearances throughout the world, Philip has also participated in the work of many organizations, particularly favoring those focused on the environment, athletics and education.

British Prime Minister Theresa May issued a statement following today's announcement, offering "our deepest gratitude and good wishes to His Royal Highness-- the Duke of Edinburgh."

Earlier in the morning, an emergency meeting had been reportedly called by Buckingham Palace, which sparked speculation on social media about the health of the Queen and Prince Philip. But a royal spokesman refuted the rumor and said "there is no cause for alarm" and the couple are "fine".

Buckingham Palace also confirmed that Queen Elizabeth will continue to carry out her full program of engagements.

France elections: Le Pen steps down as Front National leader

France elections: Le Pen steps down as Front National leader

Populist French presidential frontrunner Marine Le Pen said on Monday that she would step down as leader of the Front National (FN) party to focus on gathering a large number of voters ahead of the decisive voting round on May 7 against Emmanuel Macron.
Le Pen told France 2 that her decision had been made out of the "profound conviction" that the president of the republic must bring together all of the French people.‍
"I will be above partisan considerations," she said.
The move comes just a day after Le Pen reached the second round of the French election along with centrist Macron.
She came second with 21.30 percent, or 7.67 million votes, a record number for the FN, mirroring growing public support for the anti-immigrant and eurosceptic party.

Roshni says we will give her slow current to make her mad. Raj says we will drop her to border. Sid asks Raj not to insult himself with this weird ideas. Roshni goes to Shabnam’s room along with others and asks what she is doing? Shabnam asks her to leave the house, go to her sasural and asks if she wants to make her husband son-in-law always. DD gets angry and tries to slap her. Shabnam says she has hired security for herself and says last time when you troubled me, you got a good makeup done. She asks if she wants to get repeat performance and says your make up will be better this time. She asks everyone to get out. They leave.

DD tells everyone that she is fed up with Shabnam and says she can’t take a breath until Shabnam is breathing. Sid gets an idea and says wow mom in law what an idea? Roshni asks what are you thinking? Sid says mom in law is awesome lady with super plan. Raj says what is his idea? Sid says I will tell everything and tells about the hindi proverb. He says time makes everyone understand. Raj pulls his cheeks.

Shabnam wakes up and thinks she is feeling hungry and need to eat food. She comes out of her room and sees nobody in the house. She wonders where is everyone? She checks in the kitchen and fridge, and finds it empty. Just then she hears Sid’s voice asking Roshni to have pizza. DD, Kesar, Sid and Roshni have food. Shabnam comes to room and says she is hungry. DD says you are staying in my house forcibly and asks her to cook food. Door bell rings, Sid says ice cream have come. Shabnam receives ice cream from the delivery boy and says she will eat it. Sid asks her to eat. Shabnam suspects him and asks him to eat first. Sid says it is difficult to stoop to your level. He eats the ice cream. Shabnam takes the ice cream and goes to her room. Sid rushes to his bathroom and goes to spit the ice cream. He tells he is making Shabnam taste her own medicine. Shabnam eats ice cream. Sid looks at her from outside. He thinks it will be fun now.

Later Shabnam vomits in the washroom. DD and Roshni look at her. DD feels bad for her and asks if Sid have done something. Roshni says Sid is sleeping and he might not have done anything. Shabnam goes to doctor for a check up. Doctor checks her and says I can’t tell you anything now. He asks her to come and collect the reports in the morning, and then only he can say. Shabnam asks if there is anything serious. Doctor says let report comes first.
Sid sings a song. DD asks Sid what is going in his mind and asks what is his plan. She says Shabnam had that ice cream and vomited. Shabnam comes home and asks Lakshmi to send green tea to her room. DD asks Lakshmi not to work for her and asks Shabnam to do her own work. Sid asks DD to calm down and asks Lakshmi to serve her green tea. DD says fine. Shabnam gets angry. Roshni tells DD that very soon she will understand. Shabnam gets vomiting again and asks Lakshmi if there is any home remedy to stop vomiting.

Lakshmi says it seems a big disease happened to you. Sid tells DD that big disease to big disease. DD says it is good. Shabnam gets a report and reads that she is having only food poisoning. She is relieved. Just then she sees report in Roshni’s hand as well and gets doubtful. Later Shabnam comes to Sid and Roshni’s room and steal the papers. Sid and Roshni are just pretending to sleep. Sid says Shabnam is trapped. Shabnam reads the report and says I have a blood cancer, and this bad people don’t want me to know this so that I couldn’t get my treatment done. DD tells Sid that this is his plan. Sid says I will torture Shabnam and will make her feel death like experience. DD likes his plan.

Shabnam cries after reading the report and says I am going to die. Roshni searches for reports in her room. Shabnam asks if you was searching these reports. She says I don’t expect this from you being my sister, says you have hidden this report from me so that I don’t get my treatment done. Roshni says when you tried to kill my husband and gave injections to me, don’t you get scared. She says you will die a silent death and nobody will care. Shabnam says she will not die, but will kill everyone. She says she will not die before swallowing them. DD tells Sid that Shabnam might take a second opinion. Sid asks her to forget everything and enjoy the show with a popcorn. He says we will torture her very much and her game will be over in 24 hours.

Shabnam comes to the hospital. She finds other doctor there(Pinto in disguise of a doctor). Pinto asks what happened? Shabnam asks him about the old doctor. Pinto says he went out. Shabnam shows him report. Doctor acts as shocked and says this report reminded me of the old patient. Shabnam asks if that patient is fine? Pinto says your eyes will swollen, and your bones will have immense pain. Shabnam says I thought this report is fake. Pinto says your hairs have started to fall. Raj and DD looks at them. Raj calls Pinto and asks him not to do over acting. Pinto says complicated cases are coming today. Shabnam cries. Pinto says I will try to lower your pain. DD says he will ruin our plan. Raj is upset. Shabnam takes the report and leaves. DD scolds Pinto for overacting and says don’t know if Shabnam was convinced. Pinto thinks I have done right. Raj calls Sid and tells him about Pinto’s overacting. Sid says he will handle Shabnam and DD. He tells Roshni that Pinto have over acted. Roshni says our plan will fail. Just then they hear a girl coming home while dhol is played by the drummer.

Their unusual action received an official response on Sunday, as Edappadi Palaniswami, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, visited the protesters and urged them to stop.
The farmers are victims of a major drought, following the lowest rainfall levels of the last 140 years. On January 11, 2017, the local government in Tamil Nadu declared all districts of the state drought-hit.
For the past 40 days, the protesters have set up camp in New Delhi to demand loan waivers and a relief package of 61 billion US dollars to compensate their losses, according to Xinhua.
To make their voices heard, the farmers have resorted to extreme measures to attract attention, from wearing human skulls to eating grass, mice and snakes. "The Indian government is not giving us water. So we have no other way but to consume urine," P Ayyakkannu, the man heading the protest said, claiming that their action was to draw the federal government’s attention. He claimed that “in order to wake up the government,” they would eat their own faeces if nothing was done.
