Manchester United 1 – 1 Everton [Premier League] Highlights 2016/17

Zlatan Ibrahimovic snatched a point for Manchester United against Everton thanks to an influential cameo from outcast Luke Shaw.

Luke Shaw was the unlikely hero for Jose Mourinho as Manchester United salvaged a last-gasp 1-1 Premier League draw against Everton.

Four days on from being labelled United’s fourth-choice at left-back and having his professionalism questioned by Mourinho, Shaw’s was introduced as a second-half substitute with Everton 1-0 up thanks to Phil Jagielka’s improvised 22nd-minute finish.

And the England left-back drilled goalwards in stoppage time, with Ashley Williams sent off for handling the shot on the goalline before Zlatan Ibrahimovic converted from the penalty spot.

It prevented Everton from leapfrogging United into fifth place in the table, with Manchester City four points better off in fourth before they visit leaders Chelsea on Wednesday.

Ibrahimovic was back in the side following a three-game domestic suspension and had a header incorrectly ruled out for offside in the 71st minute, when it appeared United would follow Saturday’s 0-0 draw against West Brom with another frustrating home stalemate

Leicester City 2 – 0 Sunderland [Premier League] Highlights 2016/17

Goals from Jamie Vardy and Islam Slimani earned Leicester a 2-0 win over Sunderland – their fifth straight Premier League victory.

David Moyes’ week went from bad to worse as his Sunderland side slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Leicester City that pushed them even closer to the Premier League trapdoor.

Islam Slimani’s first club goal of 2017 and his sixth Premier League strike of the season turned the match in favour of Craig Shakespeare’s resurgent Foxes, who are now nine points clear of the drop zone.

Before Slimani’s 69th-minute header, the visitors had given under-fire manager Moyes cause for optimism in a week in which he was widely criticised for comments made to a BBC reporter in March.

Jermain Defoe looked sharp throughout as he sought his first goal for Sunderland since February, but when the England striker fails to find the net his side lack an alternative threat and they are now without a goal in six matches.

Shakespeare’s side were second best for much of the contest but Jamie Vardy lashed the ball home in the 78th minute to make it 2-0 and bury any hope Sunderland had of salvaging a draw.

Clean Lagos Initiative: Govt seeks support of sanitation officers, market women
Lagos State Government has sought the support of sanitation officers in all the 20 Local Government and 37 Local Council Development Areas as well as market men and women in its drive to salvage Lagos environment from dirt and environmental degradation.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ session held at the Secretariat, Alausa, the State Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Hon. Muslim Folami , said that the present state of some markets in Lagos is worrisome as they pose a threat to the Clean Lagos Initiative of the State Government.

The Commissioner described a dirty environment as blight to the Mega City status of the State, stressing that it was expedient for the market men and women to collaborate with the sanitation officers at the grassroot to ensure a cleaner environment.
Responding to an observation earlier raised by the Iyaloja-General, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo on the state of Lagos markets, Hon. Folami said that the plan of the present administration is to have a uniformed and standard market across the State, noting that Government does not want Lagos markets to be used as hideouts by criminals in our midst.

“An environment that is not clean will encourage all sorts of unscrupulous elements, to guide against this; leaders of each market should expedite actions and prevail on their members to imbibe the culture of cleanliness. We should not wait for an epidemic to happen before we start doing the right thing”, the Commissioner added.

Also responding to issue of compensation paid to owners of demolished markets, the Commissioner explained that due process was followed and that all the parties involved were compensated according to stalls previously occupied.

He urged the market women and men to key into government development plan, saying: “What we want from our market men and women is to key into the development plan of the State Government and cooperate with this present administration. We all know that development comes with sacrifices so whatever sacrifice that is needed to be paid for the overall development and realization of our dream Lagos should not be compromised”.

The Iyaloja-General had earlier berated the state Government for the demolition of Olorunsogo market in Onigbongbo LCDA, Ojodu Retail market and Alausa Mini market and for not paying due compensation to affected market owners.

She also used the occasion to seek for the State government’s assistance in order to enable the traders buy insurance policy that would protect them and their goods from eventualities, adding that this would reduce the burden of compensation to the market owners in case of losses or fire incidents.

Ambode tasks UBEC on education policy

Ambode tasks UBEC on education policy
Ambode tasks UBEC on education policy

As the quarterly meeting of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) hosted by the Lagos State Government came to a close today, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has tasked members of the commission to play useful role in drafting sound policies that would guide State Commissioners of Education in improving the standard of education across the country.

The Governor gave the advice today when members of the Universal Basic Education Commission UBEC paid a courtesy visit to the Governor at the Secretariat, Alausa as part of the closing ceremonies for the 18th quarterly meeting of the commission.
Ambode, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule noted that the task of achieving quality education at Primary and Junior Secondary schools in the country lies on useful advice and quality policy guidelines from the Commission to the state governments through their respective State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEB).

The Governor stated that since primary and junior secondary is the foundation upon which higher education excellence rests, it is important for the commission to prioritize useful educational policies that can promote the growth of quality education and bring the standard of education in the country at par with other leading countries of the world.

In his words, “since State governments depend largely on your advice and quality policy direction for the implementation of our programmes especially in primary and Junior schools, it is essential that your commission should from time to time review our policies and give useful advice and quality policy guidelines that can help us to implement sustainable educational programmes that will fast track the growth of standard and quality education that will make our education rank among the best in the world.”

Describing the theme of the 18th quarterly meeting of the commission: “Model Colleges: Promoting Quality and Excellence in the Basic Education Sub-Sector in Nigeria” as appropriate, Ambode stated that his administration has commenced construction of new model colleges that will stand the test of time in terms of infrastructure and modern learning equipment in the three Senatorial Districts of the State.

He added that the State government committed huge resources to education in the 2017 budget so as to enhance successful implementation of high profile educational policies that will help the State realize its dream of delivering affordable, functional and quality education to residents.

While commending the Chairman and members of the commission for choosing Lagos State as the venue of its 18th quarterly meeting, he urged them to make the communique of the meeting available to State governments, as some of their recommendations would be useful in the implementation of new policies that will further enhance better performance in the education sector.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Executive Secretary, UBEC, Dr Hamid Boboyi stated that the commission paid the visit in recognition of the landmark achievements made by the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration in critical sectors such as education, economy and health in the last two years, noting that the urban renewal and infrastructure development projects embarked upon by the State government have transformed the State beyond expectation.

He stated that the commission was impressed with what it saw during a tour of some of the educational facilities and schools in the State, adding that it is very important for UBEC to cooperate and partner with Lagos State government on some of its educational policies so as to use it as template to design programmes that will promote education standard in other places.
