In a determined effort to stop the menace of street trading, Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps Agency, LASECORPS, have arrested six motorists, four passengers and nine hawkers during a recent operation carried out on Agege Motor Road for patronizing highway hawkers while their vehicles were also impounded.
Speaking on the operation, the Corps Marshal, CSP Jimoh Amusat Bola (rtd) said LASECORPS would henceforth arrest buyers, sellers and motorists for illegal street trading, adding that the Agency was poised to stop ‘illegal street trading’ in the State.
He disclosed that the arrested offenders were subsequently arraigned at the Samuel Ilori Court in Ogba, listing the impounded vehicles as Honda Accent marked MUS-479DE, Hiace – LSR – 272XP, Toyota Hilux – KRD - 389XE; Sienna – JJJ745DQ; taxi cab – GGE 149XG and a commercial bus- LSD – 348EH.
In a judgement delivered by Magistrate Olayiwola Ogundare, the hawkers and their customers were sentenced to three months jail with an option of N10,000 fine with each of the motorists paying additional N20,000 to the State.
The state government had embarked on continuous sensitization of citizens on the dangers inherent in illegal hawking and street-trading, as well as a violation of the environmental laws of the State.
