The First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode has urged children who have been victims of any form of abuse to speak out and solicit for help from necessary quarters in order to rid our society of child abuse.
She said it is important that children speak out in order to put an end to the acts capable of exposing them to more horrifying abuses and the eventual threat to their lives and future.
The First Lady stated this while speaking at the 2017 annual Children’s Day celebration held at Lagos Television Complex with the theme; “In support of campaign against child abuse”, adding that the eradication of the act requires collaborative efforts of all relevant stakeholders in the State.
According to her, “The effects of physical, emotional, sexual abuses are not limited to health alone but also have the tendencies of hampering the future prospects of affected victims. We must know that for any society to be developed there should be a connection between its present and future. Children serve as a bridge or a transition through which this is achieved”.
Bolanle Ambode, who was represented at the event by the Wife of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mrs. Jumoke Adeyemi noted that the State government has been rendering support to abused children by offering them shelter, medical treatment, counselling and skill acquisition programmes through trained officers.
She called on parents and guardians to be alive to their responsibilities by showing care, love and affection to children, stressing that those children who lack parental affection can be easily swayed by strangers and get abused.
Mrs. Ambode appealed to perpetrators of child abuse to desist from the illegal act, bearing in mind that the State Child Rights Protection Law would severely deal with anyone caught as a culprit.
In her remarks, the General Manager, Lagos State Television, Mrs. Funke Moore described children as the happiness of the home as well as leaders of tomorrow, as such every a nation ought to protect them in every way.
She, however, called on members of the public to desist from
stigmatising victims of child abuse, but show love to them and join the fight to successfully win the war against child abuse in Lagos and Nigeria generally.
