Zinedine Zidane will have been delighted with the reaction of his compatriot as he came up big to guide a weakened Madrid squad to victory
Karim Benzema starred in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo as he scored twice and set up another to give Real Madrid a 4-1 La Liga victory at Eibar.
Madrid – without Ronaldo through injury – also had to cope without suspended duo Gareth Bale and Alvaro Morata, Zinedine Zidane deprived of his three starting attackers from the draw with Las Palmas last time out.
But Benzema, who had not scored in his previous seven LaLiga games in his worst top-flight run for three years, struck twice to send the visitors on their way to a vital win in the title race.
James Rodriguez then got his first league goal for five-and-a-half months as Zidane’s men opened up a three-goal lead within 29 minutes.
Marco Asensio capitalised on his first league start of 2017 with Madrid’s fourth after the break, before Ruben Pena scored a consolation for Eibar.
The victory puts Madrid back on top of LaLiga, two points clear of Barcelona ahead of their match against Celta Vigo at Camp Nou later on Saturday.
Eibar had been chasing what would have been a club-record fourth straight home league win, but stay seventh after a convincing defeat.

Real Madrid fell to second in La Liga – albeit with a game still in hand – after Los Blancos were drawn 3-3 at the Bernabeu by Las Palmas.
Isco had Zinedine Zidane’s side out in front eight minutes in, with the Spaniard slotting home after being played through by Mateo Kovacic.
But the visitors took only two minutes to turn the tide, pulling level through Tana, who fired home a lovely shot inside the near post.
The match took another massive swing just after the interval when Gareth Bale was sent off for a kick and shove on Jonathan Viera.
Ten minutes later Viera made the advantage count himself, netting from the spot after a Sergio Ramos was found guilty of a handball in the box.
Former Milan midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng made it 3-1 just before the hour mark after being allowed through by a mistake from Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
But the drama was not over, with Cristiano Ronaldo netting twice in the space of three minutes late on to rescue a valuable point for the capital club.

The manager announced in a post-game news conference he will not return next season.
Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has announced in a post-game media conference he will be leaving the team at the end of the season.
“I want to announce to everyone that I won’t continue at Barcelona next year. It’s difficult, but a decision I have thought about,” Enrique said following his side’s 6-1 win over Sporting Gijon. “I need to rest. That’s the main reason why I am not going to continue.”

Manchester City fell behind early on against Huddersfield Town but rallied behind a brace from Sergio Aguero to pick up an impressive 5-1 win over the Championship side in the FA Cup.
Former City academy prospect Harry Bunn put Huddersfield up 1-0 in just the 7th minute, as he capped a good counter-attack by powering a shot through Claudio Bravo’s legs.
But three goals in 10 minutes turned the replay on its head, as Leory Sane, Aguero from the spot and Pablo Zabaleta gave City a 3-1 advantage by the time the half rolled around.
Aguero picked up his brace with a goal in the 73rd minute while Kelechi Iheanacho capped the scoring in stoppage time to send Pep Guardiola’s men into the FA Cup quarter-final.
Barcelona 6 – 1 Sporting Gijon [La Liga] Highlights 2016/17 | DOWNLOAD VIDEO
Barcelona maintained momentum in the title race in La Liga, hammering Sporting Gijon 6-1 at Camp Nou on Wednesday.
Playing a couple of hours before Real Madrid took on Las Palmas, Luis Enrique’s side proved far too strong against his hometown club to move top of the standings, at least momentarily.
Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez netted either side of a Juan Rodriguez own-goal, although Barca’s recent dalliance with a confusing set up at the back led to a disjointed defensive display, which opened up space for Carlos Castro to score.
Barca’s backline routinely transitioned between a three-man and four-man assembly, with Sergio Busquets particularly being found out for the Sporting goal.
Suarez’s bulleted finish put the strugglers back in their place however, with Paco Alcacer, Neymar and Ivan Rakitic finding the net in the second half as Barcelona cruised to victory.
Barca have now won five home games on the spin in La Liga – their best run in a year – and their surge in form bears similar hallmarks of the title win in Luis Enrique’s tumultuous first season in charge.

The Premier League leaders toiled for long periods at Molineux but finally saw off stubborn Championship opposition courtesy of their Spanish forwards
Chelsea are safely through to the FA Cup quarter-finals after Pedro and Diego Costa edged them to a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Premier League leaders toiled for long periods in their fifth round encounter at Molineux, with the hosts buoyed by previous successes against Stoke City and Liverpool.
Paul Lambert’s men came closest to opening the scoring in a tight first half, with former Chelsea man George Saville striking the post inside four minutes.
Wolves could not find a breakthrough, though, and Antonio Conte’s took the lead in the 65th minute as Pedro rose to nod home a Willian delivery.
Diego Costa then made the scoreline a little more comfortable in the 89th minute with a clinical finish.

Robert Lewandowski spared Bayern Munich’s blushes by equalising with the last kick of the game to earn a 1-1 draw at Hertha Berlin, but it did little to mask over a dreadful performance in the wake of their Champions League exploits.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side were irresistible when they obliterated Arsenal 5-1 in Europe’s elite competition on Wednesday, but they looked utterly devoid of ideas and craft before second-half substitute Lewandowski stabbed home from close range in the sixth minute of stoppage time to prevent a first Bundesliga loss since November.
Bayern were behind for much of the match and deservedly so, as Vedad Ibisevic punished poor defending to score Hertha’s first goal against the Bavarians since March 2014.
The visitors looked toothless for the entirety of the first half despite dictating the tempo for much it, and half-time did not inspire a significant improvement either.
Hertha coach Pal Dardai appeared to get his tactics spot on, as the hosts not only nullified Thomas Muller in attack, but also restricted service to the German and stifled Bayern’s creativity.
But the champions showed their character and spirit, as Lewandowski found the net for the 16th time this season amidst a goalmouth scramble deep into stoppage time to stun the hosts, who had seemingly done enough to wrap up a first win over the Bavarians since 2009.

The striker continued his fine run of form in front of goal as Jose Mourinho’s men secured victory in the Europa League at Old Trafford.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a hat-trick as Manchester United defeated Saint-Etienne 3-0 to seize the advantage in the first leg of their Europa League last 32 tie.
The Swede found the back of the net courtesy of a deflection off Vincent Pajot, but Jose Mourinho’s men rode their luck on several occasions.
Saint-Etienne regularly caused United problems on the counter attack with their best chance falling to Nolan Roux, who had an effort deflected over the crossbar.
However, United soon increased their lead as Ibrahimovic found the back of the net twice in the final 15 minutes.
Real Madrid 3 – 1 SSC Napoli [Champions League] Highlights 2016/17 | DOWNLOAD VIDEO
Real Madrid were forced to come from behind to secure a 3-1 win over Napoli in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 encounter.
Lorenzo Insigne embarrassed Keylor Navas when he spotted the goalkeeper off his line sent it curling into the net from distance to fire Napoli to a surprise lead eight minutes in.
Parity was restored 10 minutes later when Dani Carvajal’s excellent cross found Karim Benzema at the back post and the striker headed in with power.
Shortly after the break, Toni Kroos gave Madrid the lead when Cristiano Ronaldo cut it across the byline for the midfielder to finish.
Casemiro made it 3-1 with a superb half volley that left Pepe Reina with no chance.

Arsenal were taken apart in the scond half by Bayern Munich as the hosts secured an emphatic 5-1 win to take control of this Champions League last 16 tie.
The Gunners were level at half-time after Alexis Sanchez, who initially missed from the penalty spot, slotted home to cancel out Arjen Robben’s stunning opener.
But Arsene Wenger’s side crumbled in the second half, with Robert Lewandowski, two from Thiago Alcantara and Thomas Muller scored to ensure the Bavarians already have one foot in the quarter-finals

Barcelona had no answer to a scintillating performance from Paris Saint-Germain as Unai Emery’s men smashed the Catalans 4-0 in Tuesday’s Champions League clash.
Burnley 1 – 1 Chelsea [Premier League] Highlights 2016/17 | DOWNLOAD VIDEO
Chelsea missed the chance to move 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League as Robbie Brady’s stunning free-kick earned a 1-1 draw for Burnley at Turf Moor.
With Tottenham losing 2-0 at Liverpool on Saturday, the door was left open for runaway leaders Chelsea to extend their advantage.
And Antonio Conte’s men were fast out of the blocks, with Pedro applying the finish to a lightning counter-attack in just the seventh minute.
However, 28 of Burnley’s 29 points prior to the match had come at home this season and Sean Dyche’s men put in a typically full-blooded display that yielded an equaliser through Brady’s exquisite free-kick on his first start for the club.
Chelsea peppered the Burnley box, but the Blues failed to break down a stubborn home defence and Burnley arguably had the better chances to win the game, with Matt Lowton and Andre Gray missing fine opportunities.
Despite the draw, Chelsea are now 10 points clear of Arsenal and Spurs, while Burnley are rewarded for their endeavour by moving up a place to 12th.

Mourinho does not think Chelsea will slip up and can be caught, after his side kept pace with the top four.
United won 2-0 against Watford, thanks to goals from Mata and Martial and are just one point off the top four.
Chelsea visit Burnley on Sunday and with 14 games left in the league Mourinho does mot think they can be caught.
Mourinho told Sky Sports when asked if United themselves can catch Chelsea: “Honestly I don’t think so. Why? Because Chelsea are a very good defensive team, they defend very well and defend with lots of players, very good players, and are very well organised.
“I think in this situation, a very defensive team wins the title with counter-attack goals, set pieces goals, and individual goals from talented players. So I don’t think they’re going to let it slip.
“But football is football, you never know.”

Sadio Mane netted a quickfire double as Liverpool saw off Tottenham 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.
The striker was included from the start and his presence appeared to rejuvenate the Reds’ attack as they took the lead inside the first 20 minutes.
Mane opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Georginio Wijnaldum put him through to slot past Hugo Lloris.
And he was on target once again not two minutes later from a scrappy situation in front of goal, to make sure Liverpool took all three points.
