The Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs, LASODA has held its 3rd disability Expo and Talent Hunt, promising that the Office will continue to create platforms for physically challenged persons to exhibit their inherent skills and talents.
Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Pharm. (Mrs.) Akinbile-Yussuf, said that the Exhibition and Talent Hunt event was aimed at giving opportunities to people living with disability to showcase their inherent skills and abilities through the various work of arts, vocations and trades, and also display their individual skills.
She said that the State government believes in the ability of its human resources and is prepared to invest in them to enhance their productivity regardless of their physical state.
In her words, “The administration of Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode is poised to leave no one behind in the overall development of the State and the country at large, this is why the State government has consistently maintained that no matter the physical state of any resident of the State, be it physically fit or living with disability, the dividends of democracy would be extended to all."
"Towards the realisation of this objective, LASODA has begun its empowerment project aimed at assisting many PWDs in the State with the provision of minimum capital for them to either start or boost their businesses." the Commissioner explained.
She urged all qualified persons to take advantage of the empowerment opportunity to become self –reliant.
Also, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola said that the event demonstrated to all that there is indeed ability in disabilities if PWDs are given a level playing field to unleash their potentials.
Outstanding participants at the Expo and Talent Hunt which witnessed the display of skills in musical comedy and other forms of entertainment were rewarded with cash gifts.
Dr. Ola Oki of the Research Centre for Special Persons in Badagry emerged as the 1st place winner of the disability expo while the vocational and rehabilitation centre for persons with disability, Owutu Ikorodu and Deaf women Association of Nigeria emerged as the 2nd and 3rd place winners respectively.
