lawson james blog entertainment news

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday lauded the achievements of five-time world cruiserweight and heavyweight boxing champion, Evander Holyfield, describing him as the greatest living boxer of all times.

Governor Ambode, who spoke at Lagos House in Ikeja when he received Holyfield on courtesy visit, said he was personally proud of the achievements of the legend in the boxing field, and described him as a great role model.

Holyfield, who is billed to slug it out with former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu at an exhibition boxing match, is in Lagos as part of activities marking the Golden Jubilee anniversary of the State, and to also give back to the society through his foundation.

The Governor, who described the visit of the boxing legend to Lagos as historic, said there was no better way to showcase sports as catalyst for growth than the collaboration of such an icon as Holyfield.

“This is exciting and historic moment for us coming at a time Lagos is celebrating the 50 years of its establishment and we want to say a big thank you to Holyfield for collaborating with us to put this as part of events marking the Golden Jubilee anniversary of Lagos State.
Boxing Legend Evander Holyfield Donates $3m Health Equipment To Lagos State Gov

“We believe strongly that in all sectors that we have tried to celebrate Lagos, this is one momentous topic that we really mean to celebrate. As a government, we have always wanted to use sports as a way of driving our economy and there is no way we can showcase sports as the catalyst for economic growth than bringing somebody who is a champion; a revered person and for him to use his God given talent and resources to promote sports in our State,” Governor Ambode said.

While noting the vision of the Evander Holyfield Foundation to nurture young stars and future boxers, as well as the issues relating to promotion of health and wellbeing of the people, Governor Ambode pledged to partner with the foundation to ensure that the set objectives are achieved, especially with regards to the people of the State.

The Governor described Holyfield as the living greatest boxer of all times, a sport icon and a champion who he is proud of his achievements, adding that the visit to Nigeria would also be used to trace the roots of the boxer back to Lagos.

“I love the concept that you want to pay back and that is the essence of leadership which is to be able to touch humanity. There are very many people that go away from their stardom and not pay back and so many champions have not been able to do anything after leaving the ring but Holyfield stand as an exception.
“On the other side, boxing should now be in the front burner of sports in Nigeria especially now that a Nigerian, Anthony Joshua recently won as the unified world heavyweight champion.

“Lagos has the largest concentration of the black people in the world and we just believe that Lagos should be well projected the visit by the boxing legend is also to promote the brand called Lagos,” Governor Ambode said.

Earlier, Holyfield said he was in Nigeria to give back to the society having achieved so much in life especially in boxing.
While recalling how he started boxing at the young age of 8 and became champion at 9, Holyfield said he felt like quitting after initially suffering defeats but his mother told him to hang on.

“I became the person I am because I listened, I followed direction and I did not quit even when I lost. In giving back to the society, I am here to say I got a Real Deal Promotion. We are looking for young fighters who want to listen and follow instruction.
“This is about giving back to the society. I want kids to learn from me how I became four times heavyweight champion,” Holyfield said.

He also announced donation of $3million worth of health equipment to Lagos State Government, a gesture which Governor Ambode commended and urged other sports legends and individuals to emulate.

We are spreading economic opportunities to reduce crime and ensure even development- Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday stated that his administration is spreading economic opportunities around the State to ensure even development and reduction in crime.
lawson james blog latest news

The Governor, who spoke through the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello when a team from the United Kingdom Royal College of Defence Studies visited him at the Secretariat, Ikeja, noted that the strategy is aimed at ensuring that the city centre is not congested due to overpopulation and influx of people in need of a better life.

He explained that the present administration in Lagos has also ensured that the towns and cities in the hinterlands are provided with the basic necessities of life and fully secured to keep criminals at bay.

The Governor said, “The Government is putting more infrastructure in place at all the divisions of the State - Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos and Epe - so that people can work in any division they live as this will reduce the population of people coming into central Lagos. In the last few weeks, the State Government has commissioned bridges and roads in all the divisions and I want to assure you that this will be a continuous exercise”.

Ambode said despite the fact that Lagos is the smallest in size and the commercial nerve centre of West Africa with over 20 million people, the administration has invested enormously in the provision of logistics support to the various security agencies to make them better prepared to confront criminals and criminal elements.
He advocated a restructuring of the present revenue allocation and power sharing system to devolve more powers to the States to enable them to function effectively like true component States in a federal system.

He reiterated that the present administration believes that only a secure State can attract foreign investment, adding that the administration has left no stone unturned in its quest to secure life and property by putting in place a State Security Trust Fund to attract assistance from the Organised Private Sector.

In his remarks, the Head of the Delegation from the United Kingdom Royal College of Defence Studies, Major General Craig Lawrence said the team was in Lagos as part of its visit to Nigeria to learn about how Lagos has been able to achieve prosperity in security despite the challenges of insurgency and other crimes.
He added that the team would also want to learn a thing or two from the State Government on the strategies being adopted by the security agencies in tackling crimes like kidnapping so that such can be replicated in their home countries.

Earlier in a presentation, the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Dr. Abdul Rasak Balogun said agencies of the Federal Government are in the process of creating security trust fund to provide a viable means of providing funds to assist the security agencies.

He added that the Lagos Government through the Trust Fund has introduced Life insurance policies for policemen in the State, adding that cheques were recently given to next-of-kin of some officers slain in the course of crossfire with criminals.

Mark Zuckerberg and Wife celebrates 5 years wedding anniversary

lawson james blog entertainment news

Mark Zuckerberg: Today is Priscilla and my five year wedding anniversary, and I want to share a fun story about how it came together.
Yesterday was the five year anniversary of Facebook's IPO. Now you may ask, who would plan their wedding for the day after their IPO? Good question.

Priscilla and I wanted a low key wedding so we decided to make it a surprise and have it in our backyard. I sent our friends and family an email telling them I was throwing a surprise party for Priscilla to celebrate her graduation from medical school. Since they thought it was a surprise for Priscilla, they kept it quiet. When they showed up at our home, I told them we were getting married. It was a great day.

One side effect of having a surprise wedding is that Facebook's CFO who was managing our IPO process had no idea we were getting married. With IPOs, the process goes on for a while and you just go public when everything is ready. When I originally set the date for our surprise, we had no idea when the IPO would be.

I remember the day David, our CFO, told me the IPO process would conclude on May 18. I was shocked. I closed the door and asked if it was possible to maybe do it a few days sooner. He said it wouldn't be ready yet. I asked if maybe we could do it a week later, and he told me that May 18 was the day it would be ready so it needed to be that day. And that's how our IPO came to be the day before our wedding.

The wedding was really special, but, as you know, our IPO wasn't exactly smooth. Priscilla and I took off on our honeymoon, but I wanted to be with our team when things got rocky, so I cut our honeymoon a few days short. Instead, I promised Priscilla that every year we'd have a honeymoon to celebrate our marriage.

That brings us to today. Some years we've gone to Japan or France. This year we're traveling around the US and we'll be spending our honeymoon in rural Maine. One lesson I've learned from marriage is that exploring together just gets better over time.
Priscilla, here's to a great sixth year of marriage and perhaps some better planning in the future!

Millions of people in north-eastern Nigeria are at risk of dying from starvation. Aid organisations are struggling to reach communities in need, as many are in remote inaccessible areas. Their mission is further complicated by Boko Haram attacks. The World Food Programmes describes the situation as the biggest crisis it's seen in the past 50 years. One killed, 22 injured by speeding car in New York’s Times Square

An 18-year-old woman was killed and 22 other people were injured when a car plowed into pedestrians in New York City's Times Square on Thursday, according to city officials, as the mayor said there was no indication of a terrorist motive.

The male driver appeared to have made an illegal turn and sped along in the wrong direction for three blocks, knocking people over until the car hit a pole and came to a stop at 45th Street and Broadway in Midtown Manhattan, at 11:55 a.m. local time, said James O'Neill, commissioner of the New York Police Department.

"Based on the information that we have at this moment, there is no indication that this was an act of terrorism," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told a news conference at the scene of the incident.
The driver, identified as 26-year-old Richard Rojas from New York City's Bronx borough, is now in custody. Witnesses said that the act was intentional, and a law enforcement source told CNN that Rojas had tested positive for hallucinogenic drug PCP.
He has two prior arrests for driving intoxicated.
